Alternative Housing to the Typical Home

by admin on March 11, 2011

Real estate is typically never a bad investment and that’s exactly why many homeowners choose to purchase a traditional home, but there are other alternatives to buying a traditional home that many people are choosing today. People are choosing to live in condominiums, modular homes, cabins, motor homes and other similar options for many reasons today, and the first reason people are choosing to do so is usually to save money, but there are other reasons as well.

When it comes to buying a condominium or a town-home, you’ll find that many people make the choice for this alternative housing for many of the same reasons. Many people these days are opting for alternative housing and preferring to purchase condominiums or town homes so that the upkeep of the property is not maintained by them alone, but shared by all the buyers in the neighborhood. Standard homes typically require greater care. For instance, yards have to be maintained by you the owner and if the construction of the home is made of wood it must be treated and painted. With the multiple unit residences such as town-homes and condominiums though, you are not required to take care of the yards, the exterior painting, the shared areas such as the recreation rooms, swimming pools or any other shared space. These things are taken care of by the homeowner’s association of the property. As you pay your mortgage, you also pay a small monthly fee to the homeowner’s association with the rest of the owners to make sure that your property remains well kept. That is only one reason choosing to live in a condominium or town-home is a wonderful choice for alternative housing. Many of them are also built like communities these days with their own general store, security gate systems, basketball and tennis courts, recreation rooms for entertaining guests and so much more than most people could ever afford to purchase on their own, should they choose to purchase a standard traditional home. Overall, what you pay for what you get is usually much greater than any of the other alternative housing solutions.

Still, other people are even choosing alternative housing solutions such as modular homes in which you purchase a piece of land and build a low cost prefabricated home on top of the land. Such alternative housing construction is a great idea if you are looking for alternative home ideas that are actually becoming more standard (common). Modular homes are very reasonably priced when compared to your standard traditional house. The parts that it’s constructed of are pre-made and delivered to the construction site in sets that are ready to be put together either by you, or by a hired group of professionals accustomed to putting together these homes. The construction time is extremely short compared to standard housing and you have numerous layouts available to choose from by various companies that offer these units. This also means that though your homes parts may be mass produced, there is still a bit of uniqueness to each one. If you are adventurous, there are even other alternative housing ideas in the modular home category as well, such as modular log cabins which are great for rural living.
