Dirt Bike Buying Guide

What should you be considering if you’re about to buy your first dirt bike? there are a number of factors you should think about including your skill level, how you propose to use it and, of course, how much you can afford. Will you be using the dirt bike for fun or serious racing? If just for fun will you be using it on a only on a specially made track or on a rough trail? Are you experienced and can cope with a powerful bike or are you a beginner who would be better of with a lower horse power bike until you gain more experience?

Most manufacturers offer dirt bikes in two categories, trail riding and racing although some only make them for one purpose so you’ll need to find out which manufacturers make the type of bike you need. One good way to find out which manufacturers are most popular is to attend a local dirt bike race and chat to the owners. They’ll be able to tell you which bikes they find most reliable and which they prefer to ride.

It is important to consider your experience when choosing a dirt bike. if you’re buying one for your child it is extremely important not to buy one that is too big or too powerful for them. Look for bikes labeled mini dirt bikes for ones suitable for kids. Buying a bike that you do not have the experience to handle is dangerous, not only to yourself but to other riders. It may be tempting to go for the highest horse power you can afford but you but you won’t look very cool if you keep falling off! Buy one that you can handle safely and progress to  a more powerful bike when you have more experience.

Should you buy  anew or a used dirt bike? For those who are new to dirt biking it might make sense to buy a used bike for your first one. If you find you really don’t enjoy the sport or for some other reason don’t use the bike as much as you had hoped you can sell it again without too losing too much money. A new bike, on the other hand, will lose value as soon as you purchase it and you could end up losing more than you can afford. A new bike however will come with a warranty so you will be covered for any mechanical repairs or other problems with the bike.

Dirt biking is great fun and you can find some good bargains in cheap dirt bikes. Take care to buy a bike suitable for your skill level and have fun!
