The Rosetta Stone Language Learning System

by admin on February 23, 2010

The Rosetta Stone Language Learning System is an interactive software based language learning course that focuses on immersion as a method of teaching a second language. The program uses text, sounds and images to teach the user the vocabulary and grammar of the language of their choosing. The system uses built in voice recognition software to rate and encourage the proper pronunciation of words by the user.

As a person progresses through the program they are met with more difficult and challenging elements of their chosen language. The system is broken up into units, each ending with a small quiz-like section and review. At anytime the user of the program is able to return to a previous section to explore any areas they may have missed or that they feel they did not complete adequately.

Generally, language experts receive the program favorably, although there has been criticism of the system for using stock images that do not necessarily represent the culture a language comes from, as well as having a common formula for presenting languages regardless of their linguistics origins and the differences that may present. A common observation is that the style of teaching the program uses is better suited to teaching vocabulary than conveying proper grammar and syntax.

Because the system is self-driven and computer based it lends itself well to busy schedules where flexibility may be preferable to traditional language classes. With any language learning program or course it is important to maintain and practice new language skills. It may be important to attend conversational meet-ups and other types of events where the user can interact with other language students of varying skill level. There are many benefits to using this program, but some users may not find the style to their liking, or may struggle with the lack of real interpersonal interaction that is present in traditional language courses.
