Shopping online can be scary, how do you know where your details are going when you finally decide to hit that submit button and send all your personal information though the digital highway? I know for some buying online is very easy and they never give a second though to the possible problems that can arise when purchasing even from an established website. For many weather they are buying a designer handbag or a cheap dvd they don’t give it a second thought.
Indeed in the last few years we have all heard many stories about identity fraud and people paying for items that never arrive or are faulty. While these incidents do occur it’s also true that most people do not experience problems when shopping online. Even so i decided to list a few points that i always check before i send my credit card out in to the digital world!
- I always like to see if the online store has been authenticated by an outside company like verisign. You can usually see their logo on the site if they are trusted and you should be able to click on it to go through to the verisign site to make sure it is authentic.
- Reviews are essential when purchasing from somewhere new and a lot of other people’s good experiences can be very reassuring. One of the easiest ways is just to type the website name into a search engine and see what comes up, you could be surprised.
- I always like to see that the shop has a physical address somewhere. This helps to convince me that they are a real operation, its much easier to track someone down if you have a legit business address.
- If you are very paranoid about where you are buying from you can use a debit card or even pre-paid credit card to purchase. These cards have much lower limits so if something does go wrong you can only lose a much smaller amount of money.
I know some of my tips may seem like common sense but then again you would be surprised how many people ignore even the basics when shopping online.
