Snow goose decoys and your wallet

by admin on June 29, 2010

Geese are intelligent birds and are hard to fool, so if you set out to hunt for them during the season you better start thinking about ways to attract them. A good call is not enough because they won’t see the source and get suspicious about the situation. If you want to be successful at shooting them you need to buy and use the best snow goose decoys you can find.

Snow geese usually have white feathers with grey or black patterns, which make the paint job a bit easier. Commercially available decoys are often lackluster in quality and finish, so you might want to either pick your ‘weapon’ very carefully, or make them on your own. After all when you are looking for some goose decoys for sale, you are going to get what you pay for.  The simplest yet a surprisingly effective goose decoy can be made out of Tyvek. It’s a registered trademark for a synthetic product made by DuPont. It’s non woven and is hard to tear thus makes the right flag material.

When you look around online for snow goose windsocks, you’ll notice that some include the head while some come without any. It’s because there are two understandings of goose behavior; one school says that they’re really drafty and tell the windsock from a real mate from a mile away. The other group of people holds that it’s a numbers game and you only need to make them come close enough so that you can shoot them, which is about 40 yards with steel pellets.

For people who believe that the former statement is true there are plastic gooses available both through the Internet and in hunting supplies stores. These are usually cheap, but not cheap enough to buy 50 of them at a time. About $70 per dozen you’d have to put together a healthy sum to buy the amount needed. Windsocks cost about $300 for the hundred, which makes a good bunch. The savvy hunter doesn’t go either way and combine the two by using a few plastic geese with a good number of windsocks in between.

Since the windsocks are just a piece of synthetic cloth, they can be easily transported on foot. Plastic is a bit heavier, but it’s still light enough for one person to carry two dozens to the destination. Two people can set up a complete spread and it won’t take a whole lot of money if you mix and match them, either. Hop online, and see how the prices look like for the amount you need, and place an order. In case you don’t really like computers you can still check them online first, and buy them in the local store later.
