The Advantages of Digital Over Film

by admin on May 6, 2010

Digital photography has become extremely popular in the last 10 years, and it’s easy to see why. Back in the day when the digital camera first came out, it was often scoffed at as being inferior to film cameras, and this was true. A print made by a digital camera didn’t look anywhere near as good as a print made by a film camera. This is however no longer the case. Not by a long shot.

People argue over how many mega pixels you need to be considered the same quality as film, but the number of mega pixels is not the only thing to be considered. The size of the sensor ratio to mega pixels is extremely important for how good quality the final print will be. That being said, 8MP is pretty close to film quality assuming that you have a relatively large sensor. There are 35mm format digital cameras today that have over 20MP and they are growing all the time. If you need even higher, you can go into medium format where the MP count is well over 30.

Another great thing about digital photography is the way we can easily store them and edit them. We no longer use film which takes a lot of time to develop, and a lot of space to store. We can fit hundreds and even thousands of photos on very small digital media cards. We can use the computer as a photo management tool that can be manipulated in many ways. The editing portion of digital photography has also been completely revolutionized. Using Photoshop or other similar applications, we can now edit a photo in any way imaginable.

This opens the doors to many different kinds of photography including product photography, sports photography, travel photography, fashion photography, photo journalism and many more!
