The Different Types of Packing Tape

There are many types of packing tapes out there that provide different kinds of support. Aside from having different kinds, there are also numerous brands who produce the different kinds of packing tapes all ranging in sizes, prices and strength. How are you supposed to choose the right kind of tape for your needs?

Before you decide on which brand to buy, it may be a good idea to know the different kinds of packing tape. These are the Teflon, hot melt, acrylic and paper backed, strapping and custom tape.

Teflon tapes are elastic and are water proof. The width of Teflon tape ranges from 1-3 inches. Hot melt packing tape are good for packing boxes tightly. It works in heat that ranges from 45- 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Acrylic and paper backed tapes need water to become sticky. They come in widths ranging from two to three inches. Strapping tapes are thin tapes whose widths usually come in ¼-one inch. Strapping tapes in one of the stronger types of packing tapes some of which use clothes to give it additional strength. Custom tapes come in different shapes and sizes as the name would imply. It’s usually a hot melt kind of packing tape or acrylic. It is up to the customer to determine what the tape will be like.

In order to identify which kind of tape you will need, you have to know what kind of strength is necessary for what you are packing. For instance if you’re packing a box just for a one day trip then you might want to use regular clear packing tape. If you plan to store the box for long periods of time then you may want to use strapping tapes. You can also ask the help of the salesperson in the store where you will buy the tape in order to determine which tape is right for the task at hand.
