In the news, we have all heard about how society is becoming more obese. This way of living is now affecting our kids as well as there are more and more cases of childhood obesity when childhood should be the most active part in one’s life. However, while obesity gets a lot of headline news, there’s another epidemic that is affecting our kids as well. Kids are now facing back problems not previously seen before due to too much time in front of the computer, video game consoles, and the TV.
Obesity and back problems go hand in hand. Due to the lack of physical activity, calories are not being burned nor are the muscles properly developed to help us carry the weight. You see more kids slouched and hunched over than ever before. If you are a parent and you see this with your kid, it’s time to do something about it before the hunch becomes a permanent fixture.
The first thing you should do with your child is visit the chiropractor and see what he has to say. If there’s an alignment issue with the spine or a skeletomuscular issue, perhaps a posture support back brace or a back support girdle is in order as means of mechanical support. Obviously, this is not a permanent solution but it would help retrain the body in how it is supposed to hold itself.
Lifestyle changes will definitely have to be adopted meaning more physical activity on a regular basis. If the kid has a computer and TV in his room, this has got to be moved elsewhere as it is not appropriate for all sorts of reasons – namely, a bedroom should be place of rest.
The computer will need to be placed where the desk and chair are properly set up in terms of adhering to proper ergonomic specifications so the child can work on his homework in a comfortable manner. Furthermore, after twenty minutes of work, one should always stretch to give the muscles as well as giving the eyes a rest.
It’s not always easy to be physically fit and active when living in such a technologically advanced society but that doesn’t mean we should not try – especially when our child’s health is involved.
