Feeding a great dane can always be an interesting experience. If you don’t do any other training it is a good idea to make sure that your great dane is properly trained to not plow you down during feeding time. I have one particular blue great dane that resembles a freight train when he knows that dinner is being served. Having a feeding routine down can save you many bumps and bruises down the road.
A good feeding routine for great danes but any giant dog should also consist of an upright dog feeder. Upright dog feeder allow nature to more properly take its course and for gravity to work for the animal and not against it. Leaning down to eat can cause digestive problems as well as stress on the back and other joints for older dogs.
If you consider how important proper posture is for us why would you think that your dog is any different. I am not going to make any claims that an upright feeder will prevent gastric torsion in great danes but I do know that many people are of this opinion. And, considering that I want to keep my dogs around for as long as possible I am willing to do things that will possibly prolong their lives and improve their health.
Upright dog feeders not only put your dog in the proper posture for eating but they also give you a good place to feed your dog. I cannot tell you how many times in the past I have kicked a water bowl that was sitting on the floor. The bottom line is that dog bowls that are relegated to the floor tend to be a mess. An upright dog bowl can make your feeding area look a whole lot more put together.
Dog feeders will also usually come with some additional storage for dog food and other dog related goodies. If your house is anything like mine any extra storage I an get is a good deal.
If you are concerned about gastric torsion there are different things that you can do to make sure that your dog remains healthy and an upright feeder could possibly help out in this area. Having a regular feeding routine and not over feeding is also one of the most important aspects of maintaining good health in your great dane.
