What is a Biometric Safe?

by admin on May 1, 2010

More and more people are choosing to install safes in their homes.  They are using these safes to protect documents such as birth certificates, passports, and other financial information against theft, fire and even floods.  With the improvements in technology and dropping prices, a biometric safe is no longer reserved for the government or someone needing military level security.  Biometric safes are becoming very accessible to homeowners and many are seeking them out as they have become household names are even being sold at Walmart.

So what is a biometric safe and how does it work?

A safe is just a safe that has a lock and prevents entry and protects its contents.  The biometric part is how the lock is opened.  It is essentially the combination or pass code.  Most people think about biometrics as only using fingerprint identification to allow access.  While this is the most common system, biometrics can refer to anything from voice recognitions to retinal scans to DNA tests.  Fingerprint recognition is really the only product that has become affordable enough to be mainstream and affordable by consumers.

Biometric safes need to be programmed with the combination just like any other safe, but the difference is that your fingerprint, in the most common case, is what will open the safe.  You will go through a process known as enrollment where the scanner reads your fingerprint several times to insure it has the correct image of your finger.  The safe software then stores that image as a complex algorithm or a detailed graph that only the software can read and is virtually impossible to falsely duplicate.

A biometric safe is right for you if you have anything of value that you need to store.  This safe is also good for quick access as there are no buttons to push or combination dials to turn (and nothing to remember).  This is especially helpful as a pistol safe.  No matter what you decide, owning a biometric safe is worth the money.
