Wood Worktops

by admin on April 21, 2010

A great looking design for your kitchen is solid wood worktops. These counter tops are not as expensive as marble or granite and they are just as attractive. Wood surfaces are much more beautiful than laminate and more versatile. Wood does require more basic care than other products but it will last a lifetime and looks better with each passing year if properly maintained.

Wood surfaces are available in several grain patterns and colors. Whether you choose one of the darker shades like oak or walnut or a lighter shade like maple or beech, wood grains add warmth and personality to any room.

It is easy to keep oiled wood clean, even though most people think it is not. Wood is durable, but people need to take care not to intentionally damage it. For example, your worktop should never be used as a cutting board. In addition, when placing hot items on the counter always put down a hot pad.

Cut wood is very clean because after it is cut the fibers discharge natural antiseptics that kill germs that commonly live on counter surfaces. The risk of E. Coli is reduced and there is no need to clean with harsh chemicals. Wood can be damaged by washing it with bleach so never use it as a cleaner for your wood counter surfaces.

Wood does require regular maintenance to make sure it will last for years. Once a month the wood should be oiled with mineral oil not vegetable oil or once a year the surface should be lacquered to keep the wood from warping. Keeping the wood sealed will also prevent stains and scratches. Many people opt to lacquer their wood once a year to save time, but performing the monthly oiling will actually make the wood stronger and keep up its resistance to scorches and stains. One other important point is that oiled wood will build up a richer, deep sheen on the surface allowing the natural beauty to come out over the years.

Wood worktops require more maintenance and basic care than other products but they are less expensive than those products. Installing wood counter tops in your kitchen will add warmth and a touch of class.
